Situated approximately 6 degrees North of the equator on the West coast of Africa, Sierra Leone is bordered on the North and N/East by Guinea and to the South and S/East by Liberia with the Atlantic Ocean to the West with around 250 miles/400 km of coastline.
It is a relatively small African country. The population is very similar to that of the whole of Ireland (including N.I.) with about 6 million people widely dispersed and contained on a significantly smaller land mass (total: 71,740 sq km S.Leone and 83,169 sq km Ireland).
From the West coast which has a 400 km coastline the land presents with low lying marshland swamps which open out onto rainforest plains and very fertile farmland. In the East is a mountainous plateau rising to nearly 2000 mtrs. There is a rising plateau which forms the bay around Freetown, the capital, and has the world’s third largest deep water natural harbour.
Freetown, both the capital and the largest city is the hub of Sierra Leonean economy and definitely the commercial, educational and cultural centre of the country. Bo is the second city and of a distinctly differnet character. Other major cities include Kenema, Koidu Town, Makeni and Magburaka.
Climate is tropical having a both a monsoon and a dry season. It is hot!
